Providing Services for Addiction and Mental Health Disorders

Mental health plays a crucial role in our overall well-being, yet it often goes unnoticed or overlooked. In fact, over the last decade, about 20% of Americans are going through a mental health problem. At the same, the National Institute of Mental Health estimates that about half of those Americans are ignoring signs and not getting help.  While it’s normal to experience ups and downs, persistent changes in thoughts, feelings, or behaviors could be a sign that something deeper is going on. Recognizing the warning signs of poor mental health is the first step toward getting the support and care you need.

Here are major signs that may indicate poor mental health:

Persistent Sadness or Irritability

If feelings of sadness, hopelessness, or irritability last for weeks or more, it might be a sign of depression or another mood disorder. This isn’t just about having a bad day—it’s a lasting emotional state that affects your outlook on life, motivation, and relationships.

Examples:

  • Feeling numb or disconnected from your emotions
  • Lashing out or withdrawing from people for no clear reason
  • Crying frequently or struggling to find joy
Severe mental health signs not to ignore.

Changes in Sleep or Appetite

A sudden shift in sleep patterns—either sleeping too much or too little—can be a red flag. The same goes for appetite changes, whether you’re eating far more or less than usual.

Examples:

  • Insomnia or oversleeping
  • Skipping meals or binge eating
  • Unexplained weight loss or gain

Withdrawal from Social Activities

If someone who was once outgoing starts avoiding friends, family, or social events, it may be more than just a desire for solitude. Isolation is a common symptom of various mental health conditions.

Examples:

  • Canceling plans often or ghosting loved ones
  • Feeling overwhelmed in social settings
  • Losing interest in hobbies or group activities

Difficulty Concentrating or Functioning

Struggling to focus, make decisions, or complete tasks could indicate an underlying mental health issue. These cognitive changes can interfere with daily life and job performance.

Examples:

  • Constant brain fog or forgetfulness
  • Trouble completing work or school assignments
  • Feeling mentally “checked out” or disconnected

Increased Use of Substances or Risky Behavior

Some people turn to alcohol, drugs, or risky behaviors to cope with emotional distress. While this might provide temporary relief, it often worsens mental health over time.

Examples:

  • Using substances to escape or numb feelings
  • Reckless driving, gambling, or unsafe sexual behavior
  • Sudden changes in lifestyle or impulsive decisions

Final Thoughts

Mental health struggles are more common than many people realize, and there’s no shame in seeking help. If you or someone you know is showing signs of poor mental health, talking to a therapist, counselor, or healthcare professional can make a world of difference. Early intervention is key to recovery and improved quality of life. Mental health is equally important as physical health for total wellness.
