Providing Services for Addiction and Mental Health Disorders

Sad businessman

At some time during your life, you might come to a point where everything feels wrong.

You may find yourself feeling aimless and lacking purpose, and feeling discontent with who you are as a person. You may even find yourself frequently asking, “why is everything going wrong in my life?”, “Why am I unhappy?” or even “why do I hate my life?”

Fortunately, this feeling doesn’t have to be permanent. With just a few lifestyle changes, you can learn how to stop hating yourself, and by extension, learn how to start enjoying life again.

Narrow Down Your Problems

There are probably a few specific factors that are making you unhappy with your life, and your first step is to try and figure out what they are.

Instead of using statements like “I hate my life,” try to address the root of the problem, like “I hate the way people treat me at my job” or “I hate having anxiety.”

Once you manage to address something more specific, you’ll have an easier time learning to cope. Of course, some of these factors might be out of your control, but by recognizing what’s causing your unhappiness, you may be able to adjust how you handle and react to them.

Change Something

No matter what it is, the first step towards improving your life is making a change.

It doesn’t have to be anything drastic, either. Whether it’s something as minor as making weekly library trips, finding a new hobby, or setting aside time to meditate, adding a little variety to your life can make a significant difference.

Show Kindness

A little bit of kindness, whether it’s towards yourself or someone else, can go a long way.

For example, you could bake something for your neighbors or volunteer at a food pantry in your spare time. When you’re kind to others, not only will you bring a little happiness into other people’s lives, but that happiness can reflect back on you.

Being kind to yourself is just as important, too. Make a point to take care of yourself every day. Try your best to eat healthy foods and maintain proper hygiene. This can be difficult when you’re struggling with mental health, but it’s an important step.

Talk to People

When you’re unhappy with your life, isolation is the worst thing you can do to yourself.

Call up a friend or family member when you’re able to. You can even reach out to people you haven’t spoken to in a while; chances are, they’ll be happy to hear from you.

Try your best not to isolate yourself. Getting yourself out there can be intimidating, but it doesn’t necessarily mean going to a crowded bar — it can mean something as simple as saying hi to a stranger on the bus or joining a small book club at the library.

Seek a Professional

Even when you follow these tips, learning how not to hate your life can still be a challenge. If the resources are available to you, try and find a therapist that you can rely on. A professional that understands your personal needs and struggles will be able to help you more directly.

Moving Forward

As you work towards improving your life, make sure to be patient with yourself. You shouldn’t expect any change to happen overnight. Learning how to enjoy life again will take some time, but it’ll be worth it in the end.

Remember that you’re not alone. If you start having thoughts of suicide or self-harm, don’t be afraid to reach out to a crisis hotline.
