Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder is a complex illness that occurs when someone experiences or witnesses a traumatic event. Symptoms can last a lifetime, especially if untreated. According to the VA, about 7% of military personnel experience PTSD. That number has more than doubled since the Korea conflict. At the same time, civilians are not far behind at 5% of adults, which is why getting help for Post Traumatic Stress Disorder is imperative. Do you think you may have PTSD? What is PTSD?

A traumatic experience or event can leave an imprint on someone’s mind for years. There is no discrimination for who can develop PTSD. Different kinds of trauma can affect people of all ages and genders. That being said, military veterans do experience PTSD more than civilians.

This disorder is triggered by repeated exposure to violence and trauma. For this reason, it is most evident in soldiers and victims of domestic violence. It is not uncommon for sufferers of complex PTSD to develop dissociative disorders and personality disorders.

Behavioral Therapies for PTSD

Treating Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder

Typically, the most effective therapies for PTSD are trauma-based behavioral therapies, such as: CBT, Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing (EMDR), and exposure therapy. These treatments can help you work through your traumatic events by teaching you to visualize, talk about, or think about the event until it’s decreased to a manageable level. You will also un-learn unhealthy beliefs about the trauma.
